With Aspen University’s 2024 graduation day fast approaching, it is our privilege to showcase the stories of some of our extraordinary graduates. Today we acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Imuetinyan Phillipa Ehondor, who earned her BSN in October 2023 and will be joining us at Commencement this year. Her story demonstrates the power of family legacy, and next week she will walk the stage as an advocate for the elderly and a champion for compassionate care.
To the Aspen University community – esteemed faculty, fellow graduates, family, and friends; it will be an honor to stand among you as we celebrate not just our individual accomplishments, but the collective achievements of a diverse and dynamic community. As I reflect on my educational journey, I am reminded of a quote by Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This journey, shaped by my family’s legacy and fueled by my experiences, has taught me the importance of compassion and connection in every interaction.
I was born and raised in Nigeria, where my roots run deep in a culture that values tradition and community. My grandmother was a traditional birth attendant in Benin, using her knowledge of herbs to assist women during childbirth. Her unwavering dedication to nurturing life inspired not only my career path but also my belief in the power of care. My mother followed closely in her footsteps, serving as a Director of Nursing Services for over 35 years. Watching her dedication and compassion instilled in me a profound respect for the nursing profession and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
As a first-generation student in the United States, my journey has not been without challenges. I completed my master’s degree in computer engineering in Nigeria before realizing that my true passion lay in nursing. This realization led me to pursue a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), then as a Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Today, I am part of the second academic generation of nurses in my family, but I also acknowledge my grandmother’s legacy as the third generation dedicated to healing.
Currently, I am pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a focus on gerontology, motivated by my love and respect for the elderly, and passion for the Nursing profession. The wisdom of the elderly and their experiences are treasures that deserve to be honored and cared for, and I aspire to be an advocate for their needs in the healthcare system.
Throughout this journey, Aspen University has been instrumental in helping me achieve my academic and professional goals. From the moment I enrolled, I found a supportive community that understood the complexities of balancing education with life’s responsibilities. The flexibility of the programs allowed me to continue my studies while working and caring for my family. The faculty’s encouragement and guidance pushed me to reach new heights, allowing me to uncover my potential and redefine my aspirations.
As we prepare to convene and celebrate, I want to share some words of wisdom with my fellow graduates. Life is a series of interconnected stories—our own and those of others. As we move forward, let us not only pursue our ambitions but also remember to uplift and connect with those around us. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, “Not all those who wander are lost.” Embrace the uncertainty that lies ahead; often the most unexpected paths lead us to our greatest strengths.
In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Aspen University for providing me with the tools and resources to succeed. As we embark on our next chapters, let us carry forth the legacies of our families, honor the traditions that shape us, and continue to make a difference in the lives of others. Together, we can change the world, one compassionate act at a time.
