Pursuing a doctoral degree is a journey that requires dedication, resilience, and a deep passion for learning. We’re delighted to spotlight Dr. Keith Hodgson, who completed his Doctor of Education in Leadership and Learning with a specialization in Organizational Leadership program in January 2025. Keith shares his inspiring educational journey, detailing the challenges, triumphs, and personal growth he experienced while navigating the rigorous demands of a doctoral program. From his motivation to pursue advanced study to the lessons he learned through coursework and dissertation research, his story provides a glimpse into the realities of doctoral education and offers valuable insights for those considering a similar path.
My Why
I chose to pursue a doctorate to foster personal and professional growth, embrace my lifelong passion for learning, and deepen my understanding of how global leadership dynamics influence education, society, business, and politics.
My Coursework
My doctoral coursework proved to be the most rigorous and transformative experience of my life, demanding sustained effort and resilience. While intellectual challenges and the pursuit of high academic and writing standards were expected, I encountered unforeseen trials, including emotional and psychological hurdles, the demands of time management, the intricacies of short- and long-term planning, financial pressures, and navigating academic politics and relationships.
Despite the rigor, the depth of knowledge I gained was both inspiring and empowering. Through this journey, I developed a profound appreciation for well-written and thoroughly researched texts, which became invaluable tools for improving my writing mechanics, thought development, and ability to cite and synthesize material. I found myself deeply engaged in every course—even those I initially approached with apprehension—thanks to the synergy of well-designed syllabi, exceptional textbooks, and passionate, engaging professors. These elements strengthened my skills and confidence with each new experience.
Although many suggest that grades are less significant in a doctoral program, I found them to be a consistent motivator, driving me to maintain the highest standards in every assignment and course.
My Dissertation
My dissertation demanded mastery of a specialized field and a willingness to challenge the boundaries of existing knowledge. The process of contributing new insights and discoveries was both exhilarating and intellectually demanding, as it required me to tackle unresolved questions, analyze and critique the work of others, and construct a robust theoretical framework.
The focus of my research was a collaborative inquiry into the effectiveness of international experiential learning programs in cultivating global citizenship attributes among high school students. I envisioned this work as a realization of John Dewey’s vision of a collaborative classroom, where students’ perspectives and interactions foster learning and provide meaningful experiential opportunities. My study created a framework for high school students to engage in real-world learning experiences outside the classroom, enabling them to explore, interact, and gain a global perspective through multiple lenses.
Conclusion
The four-year journey of earning my doctorate was marked by a balance of intellectual rigor, emotional resilience, and the development of practical strategies to manage my time, maintain motivation, and protect my health and well-being. While the challenges were significant, the rewards of contributing to my field, gaining expertise, and achieving this milestone were invaluable, making my journey both inspired and deeply fulfilling.
